My Rhodes Restaurant Guide for an Authentic Greek Dining Experience

“Greek food is not about complexity, but about a perfect balance of ingredients.” — Diane Kochilas

Greek Cuisine in Rhodes

Much like the rest of Greece, Rhodes, the largest island in the Dodecanese archipelago, has a distinct and fascinating cultural link to its cuisine. With a focus on the world-renowned ‘Mediterranean diet’, Rhodes’ cuisine features fresh seafood, seasonal fruits and vegetables, high-quality olive oil, and dishes that reflect the island’s emphasis on sustainably sourced ingredients.

Most of the dishes I sampled in Rhodes used only a few, but very fresh, ingredients, with an emphasis on showcasing the island’s rich culinary heritage. Think delicious fish, creamy yoghurt dips, colourful salads, and hearty meat dishes.

My Top Five Recommendations for an Authentic Greek Dining Experience

If you are seeking to make the most of the island’s culinary offerings and are in search of more traditional and authentic eateries—as, let’s face it, the island is overwhelmingly overrun with tourist traps—the following are my recommendations. Alongside what I believe to be the best traditional eateries, I have also thrown in a few spots to grab a drink too, ideal for both the middle of the day or in the evening when you’re seeking a moment to unwind.

Whether you are travelling with a partner, friends, or family, these spots have been carefully tried and tested by me, and I’m happy to recommend them to those seeking classic Greek dishes, allowing you to truly sample some of the tasty delights this holiday hotspot island has to offer.

Meli Restaurant

Visit for: Traditional Greek flavours in a quirky alfresco dining setting

When it comes to traditional Greek tavernas with a contemporary touch, Meli Restaurant is the place to go. With its whimsical white and blue décor and picturesque alfresco dining setup amidst a quiet, cobblestone backstreet location, it’s a fantastic spot to grab lunch or dinner.

The food is incredibly fresh and tasty, allowing you to sample some traditional Greek salads, fish and meat dishes, alongside ouzo and wines. The owner is incredibly friendly and involved in the day-to-day operations here, which is probably why it is such a popular spot, as everything is carefully quality controlled.

At Thomas

Visit for: Homemade authentic seafood dishes served overlooking ancient city walls

When it comes to laid-back dining and Greek dishes that are uncompromised in authenticity for tourists, At Thomas is one for your Rhodes restaurant must visit list. Situated on a street corner overlooking the majestic ancient city walls, this place has both gorgeous views and tasty food to boot.

What’s more, you will receive a warm and friendly Greek welcome as the place is family-run. You can immediately feel the warmth from its owners upon being seated. Everything you order here is proudly made on site, and their tzatziki is the best I have ever had—and I am not exaggerating!

Be sure to ask for recommendations as the owners will direct you to the freshest seafood option too. A highly recommended spot!

The Last Butler

Visit for: A fancy night-cap on date night

When searching for the best spots to eat and drink in Rhodes, I didn’t think there would be a chance to grab a cocktail (or several!) in a cool, speakeasy-style bar downtown in the heart of Rhodes Town.

This charming and chic bar is like something you might expect in the middle of a big city, with gorgeous and quirky décor and a cocktail book detailing some weird and wonderful cocktail concoctions that are totally unique.

Whether you sit indoors or outside, you are guaranteed to have a good time. It’s the ultimate date night destination!

Niohori Restaurant

Visit for: Family-run taverna-style curbside dining

When you picture a traditional Greek taverna, Niohori Restaurant is definitely a dining spot that brings your imagination into reality. A rustic building whose seating spills out into the street and adorned with bougainvillea, it’s a quaint scene that acts as a perfect backdrop to sampling some authentic Greek dishes. I also discovered that the meat served at the restaurant is sourced from their very own butcher shop—convenient and delicious!

Loved by locals and tourists alike, it’s a busy spot, and one thing I will note is that service can be a little slow and somewhat disorganised when it comes to seating, so be sure to visit when you have some time to kill. It’s worth the wait!

Socratous Garden

Visit for: A lush oasis of respite from the heat in the Old Town centre

As you pass through the bustling centre of Rhodes Old Town, you just might miss a little oasis of lush greenery and water features that resides amidst the knick-knack and souvenir stalls.

Socratous Garden offers the ultimate respite for weary explorers, particularly on a hot day, as its shady canopies and laid-back vibe (featuring traditional Greek background music for added ambiance) offer a quiet space to have a cocktail or snack.

Prices here are also pretty reasonable, which is almost unheard of in such a central location.
