Birdwatching In The Gambia With Award-Winning Guide Malick Suso

Birdwatching In The Gambia

The Gambia may be a hidden gem when it comes to vibrant African travel destinations, but it is far more well known among the birding community. Its geography and climate make it a haven for a high concentration of bird species. And the best thing is, they can be seen up close in a very accessible way.

We found that most tour guides were either bird experts themselves or had a very good knowledge of their country’s birds. Birdwatching is a major factor in the tourism economy here, and Gambians seem to be very proud of it.

A Unique And Perfect Habitat For Birds

With the country’s outline lying parallel to the river running through its backbone, The Gambia offers a unique ecology and habitat that is perfect for birdlife. The country’s huge variety of species is a result of The Gambia offering a range of habitat types, from mangroves and savanna to coastal wetlands, forests, floodplains and riverbanks.

You don’t have to travel far to experience birds of all kinds within a pretty concentrated space. It is estimated that there are over 600 bird species here, compared to around 250 in the UK.

Birdwatching For Beginners

Whether you are bird-obsessed and looking to tick particular species off your list, or are a birding beginner just tagging along, birdwatching in The Gambia is perfect for beginners as well as seasoned twitchers. You can’t venture very far without spotting birds of all shapes and sizes.

Even waking up at our hotel, we heard and saw all kinds of fascinating species from our rooftop balcony!

Malick Suso Gambian Bird Guide Tour Review

We had the privilege of going birdwatching with a guide from Chris Packham’s award-winning birding expert, Malick Suso. Winner of the ‘Wildlife & Safari’ category at Wanderlust’s 2023 World Guide Awards, choosing to book through Malick was an easy choice. However, if you’re looking to do the same, be sure to book early.

Since Malick’s a busy man and we were last-minute bookers, we toured with his son, a budding birder, and Essa, one of his trusted, highly skilled guides. Essa was incredible – he nailed bird calls, knew the best spots, and used clever techniques to attract birds. Malick’s son was equally brilliant and enthusiastic, eager to follow in his father’s footsteps and offering a wealth of bird knowledge himself.

We set off early in our 4×4, camera and binoculars in hand, and explored Manibah Woods, Farasutu Forest, and some hidden gems and hides off the beaten path. Moving through different types of habitats and lesser-known birding spots meant that we were able to spot over 60 bird species in one day – and I know this because I noted each of them down!

From owls and kingfishers to vibrant rollers and majestic vultures, it was a bird lover’s dream come true. I learnt so much during our tour and came away with some fantastic photos too, so be sure to bring your camera as well as your binoculars.

A private full-day tour costs £85 per person, including a guide and driver, and tours are customisable. If you’re looking to focus on a particular species or have specific interests, be sure to let your guide know. They also offer half-day and tailored tours to focus on the species you’re most excited about.

The Best Season For Birdwatching In The Gambia

We visited in January, right in the middle of the dry season (November to April), which is hailed as offering the best conditions for birding. I can confirm that the birdlife was absolutely thriving!

The Best Birdwatching Experience In The Gambia

I would highly recommend booking with Malick Suso, whether you’re able to secure the man himself or one of his highly trained guides who work alongside him. We saw other operators take larger groups, whereas we had Essa and Lamin to ourselves, which made spotting birds easier and meant the experience felt entirely tailored to us.

The level of professionalism from our guides was unmatched, and it’s clear why Suso is as reputable and highly sought after as he is when he is represented by such knowledgeable and passionate individuals.

Until next time,

Lica xoxo
